Price Increase Implemented December 1, 2024 and Why It Matters

Let’s chat with Professor Fossum. There’s no question that the cost of living has risen. As a salon, we’ve absorbed those costs the last 4 years, but it’s no longer sustainable and we felt in an effort to maintain our honesty and transparency, we would explain the WHY.

This is the transcript from our price raise + inflation video that went up on Instagram earlier this week. To watch the full video, please click here.

Hi friends, I just wanted to talk a little bit about some upcoming changes in the salon. I have a feeling we might end up representing many other small businesses as they mirror similar changes, given the current climate.

We have a price increase that will be taking effect on December 1st.

The inflation rates we all hear about are an average of the increases of specific items we all use in our homes or purchase on a regular basis, but what does that mean?

You may have heard things like, “the rate is back down to what it was in 2021 at 2.4%.”

That is a true statement but when you look at the prices of what you are buying, nothing is coming down. In fact, the prices are still more than 20% higher on average than they were in 2021.

How can both things be true?

What does inflation really mean for you and for businesses like ours?

The first thing to realize is, the infamous inflation rate we all hear about is a rate of price increases year over year, not average prices. If the rate ever goes “down” to zero, it only means prices aren’t increasing at the moment, and not coming down at all.

We all know our dollars just have a Nasty habit of losing their value over time and how fast that happens is the rate.

For the visually minded folks, I have some graphs from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This first graph shows what the rate has been doing since 2010. It would appear as though we are nearing pre-pandemic normalcy so if prices in the store are still over 20% higher, it would be easy to assume that the store is price gouging its customers now.

A clearer picture of what is actually going on is shown by the dotted lines on the graph below. You still see the rate from the last graph by the solid lines toward the bottom and you see them coming back down to “normal”, same as we saw before but now we can see those dotted lines make more sense considering the prices we all see. Basically, if you’ve has a dollar in you piggy bank since 2020, it's now only worth 82 cents.

If this hasn’t been depressing enough, the rates and prices from the Bureau of Labor Statistics have been talking about averages. Some have increased more. Apparel, for instance, brings the average down while rent and transportation which affects so many other things, raises it.

Here you see how it starts to break down into different categories.

In the name of transparency, we want to show you a few of our real-life examples determining how we arrived at our conclusion.

Box of foils went from $10.99 to $24.99 = 127% increase

Box of gloves went from $8.99 to $16.99= 88.9% increase

You can imagine how quickly we go through just these two items alone.

Rent increased 10% from just last year

Utilities increased 25% from last year

Insurance increased 30%

Speaking on behalf of many of the businesses you frequent, this level of inflation the last few years has been something we’ve never experienced before. It’s a feat in itself to have survived since 2020. Operating costs have soared and until now most small businesses have absorbed it. It’s not sustainable. Big businesses have no problem, they have the ability to spread their price increases wide enough that you don’t even notice an increase on each item. It’s not until you see the receipt and ponder why your grocery bill is considerably higher for the same amount of items. You’ll never see it announced, you’ll just eventually notice it. Small businesses are cursed with a considerable disadvantage. Top that off with a conscience-able desire to explain with transparency…it’s tough.

We believe in complete transparency, honesty and integrity. Thank you so much for your continued support.

First Impressions from the Apprentice

As with any new hire at The Hair Tailor, we like to ask them… “is there anything surprising that you’ve learned or is there anything that’s different than you expected?” When we are so immersed in our space, our clients and with our team, it can be SO good to get a fresh perspective from someone that’s new to the crew. So naturally, we opened the conversation with our newest stylist apprentice, Linsey.

Here’s what she had to say:

“I’ve been at the Hair Tailor for almost a month now and I’ve already learned so much. The atmosphere is truly unlike any other salon I’ve been in. From the small details of getting a little drink to making every client have their dream hair… each and every stylist has something different that they teach me, I look up to every single one of them. From working closely with Jenna or just shadowing the other girls I have already taken in so much more knowledge and skills then I could imagine! This has helped me feel more confident in my skills as a stylist, and being able to apply that knowledge to the clients I’ve had so far has been amazing. I’m super excited to get to know all my future clients and to enjoy everything Stillwater has to offer. And what I’ve found most surprising is how welcoming and nice and funny everyone is. They made me feel comfortable right away, and I feel like I get closer to everyone each day. There is truly no drama in the salon and boy that is hard to find! “

If you know our team, you know we’re a pretty awesome team so we’re excited for Linsey to get to settle in even more and to grow her confidence and skills as a stylist. As always, thank you to all of our clients for helping us give another addition to the team a warm welcome. We learn best by doing and Linsey is being trained by some of the best in the industry with some of the best clients. Truly.

AJ on calling The Hair Tailor 'home'

AJ has now been at The Hair Tailor for a few months and after getting settled in post-baby, she wanted to share some of her favorite parts about joining the Hair Tailor crew…

Hey, it’s AJ!

Just wanted to do a quick “how I’m settling” check-in:

I'm now a mama of two and besides feeling alllll the feels for my babies; I am just loving doing "me" behind the chair again, more than ever. Being at this salon feels like a "meant to be" kind of thing. What can I say? I am just so proud to be here and share a space with the good, strong women that make it.   This salon home is something special and I could tell this even before I walked through the door. After being here for a few months now, here are a few of my favorite things:

  • I am automatically a better stylist since being here and it will never be good enough for me; this is a good thing 😉

  • I love our collective attention to detail from our offering a delicious drink to help sink into that chair a little more and tailoring the music to the clientele at any given time. It's all about vibes and I'm all for that. I think that's so rare but necessary in our industry.

  • We all care equally about our client’s salon experience and we support one another in making that come to life. You will constantly find us bouncing to other chairs to share ideas and cross-train when we can.

Umm... and this space? Hello!!!! Amazing. Don't even get me started on the new addition!! Soooo excited 😁

Jenna is the most genuine and fierce support to ask for in a boss. She says what she means and means what she says; so refreshing.

Now I’m curious, why do YOU love the Hair Tailor?

Have you noticed that I have a slight obsession with old doors?

My life, in regards to construction purposes, would be so much simpler if I didn’t.

Standard 36 inch doors are not hard to come by. They meet permitting parameters, they come with a pre-fabricated frame, easily installed. Minimal effort. You know what they don’t have? You guessed it….character. Danny cringes every time I say, “and then I could probably find a warehouse door for this spot.”

Deep down he’s got an appreciation for rehabilitating the “old” as well.

After a warehouse #adventure, I fell in love with the biggest, roughest, dirtiest, most unwanted doors in the place. This was a solo trip and so I had to ask the only employee working that day for some assistance, a lovely gal (her name escapes me, unfortunately).

So I drove carefully into the “yard” for loading.

Ladies and gentlemen, navigating the drive through the yard in a forward position was daunting enough. The realization then hits me…I’m going to have to reverse out of here. Under pressure to prove that I *can* in fact navigate the yard in reverse, with five doors hanging out the back-end, I succeeded in exiting the area with the slowest mph in this warehouse’s history, I’m sure of it.

A record is a record. I’m fine with it.

After transporting these doors to their new home, the rehabilitation began. Usually at night, long after clients have headed home and the salon doors are locked, I’d work on stripping dozens of layers of paint. Once the first layer of paint has been stripped and I’m sweating, I start cursing whomever (asshole) desecrated these doors in the first place.

Once I get in the rhythm though, my mind can’t help but imagine stories of who this person (still an asshole) was. Like, WHY? Just whyyyyy?

I think that’s what it is.

The rehabbed doors that join the old and new space.

I think it’s why I have an obsession with these old doors. While I work so hard to bring these back to life, I have movies playing in my head. I see the time periods (each layer of paint is a testament to those). I see all the hands that have turned those door knobs.

Grooms carrying their brides across the thresholds. New parents bringing baby home from the hospital. A nervous knock on this very door when a young man announces his arrival to pick up his date. Inviting family in for the holidays as the door swings open, with a cheerful, “hello!”

They don’t belong in a warehouse. They are worth rehabilitating.

The Story In The Floors

Hello All. This is Danny. Jenna’s husband. I am the guy you may have heard making some noise over in the new space. Jenna asked me to explain the saga of the floor so here goes.

Hello All.  This is Danny.  Jenna’s husband.  I am the guy you may have heard making some noise over in the new space.  Jenna asked me to explain the saga of the floor so here goes.

All good and challenging things have started with a walk through the new space.  Jenna and I were busy contemplating the prospect of this next chapter: expanding The Hair Tailor.  Jenna had so many ideas and the potential was clearly there but through it all, I couldn’t help but notice the layers of rehab that had taken place in the space itself.  I caught myself poking around, doing some light investigating, and discovering various period-specific building materials and architectural anomalies. Yikes.

The space had some previous lives for sure and there was NO telling what was under the surface. Not ideal when you’re about to sink a good amount of money into what felt like a big question mark.

Carefully salvaging the original floorboards in the Isaac Staples Sawmill building.

Under that old Linoleum, there were really cool original planks…that seemed to be fashioned into a turn-of-the-century skate park.  No kidding there. The floor was not just wavey.  It was quite literally a wooden bowl. Neither intentional nor ideal for the space. The entire thing had settled between the timbers so badly that someone, over many decades, addressed it by basically building a bridge and covering it with the “new” floor. Problem not-so-solved.

The floor also had chutes cut through.  Some of these holes were big enough that you could drop a major appliance clear through without issue.  It was going to take some serious work and TLC.

We were going to have to pull up the old planks, level the area, and put them back down while patching the holes along the way all while damaging the old wood as little as possible.  Sounds easy but that last part was probably the most difficult.  The wood was brittle and the nails were those old square things that somebody pounded more than a century ago.  I can tell you this.  If you can fill a five-gallon pail with the nails you’ve pulled, you get pretty good at it.  If you fill a second pail, you’re a master…and your knees will never work quite right again.

I hated that task but there is something about working in an old building that I love.  Not only seeing what they did but also knowing HOW they must have done it.  Hand tools and elbow grease went a long way both then and now.  It’s unbelievable, to say the least.

You also find little artifacts in these old buildings.  Ordinary bottle caps and cigarette butts lay witness to a little downtime amidst some real hard work. A lost skeleton key wedged between the floorboards tells a story of someone’s bad day.  And there’s something about being the first person to see or touch these things in over 100 years sort of connects you in a very real way our predecessors and to a place in time that we can only imagine in black and white.

I wonder who will find our lost trinkets.  I wonder what they will think when they take apart what we’ve left behind.

One thing that was obvious was that the flooring had a bit of a wave (this was not a good sign, clearly) I also noticed a spot or two that felt a bit spongy underfoot.  It’s an old timber-frame building with a lot of history so this brand of “rustic charm” is to be expected.  Either way, we knew we needed to do something with the floor.

If you know Jenna, or the current Hair Tailor space, linoleum (which is what the space started with) didn’t really fit into any of Jenna’s visions.  But finding original floorboards under all of it would.

We had to ask ourselves, do we address the spongy spots and just put something new over the entire thing or dig in and see what’s going on under there? That’s right. We had to see what was under it. You will never guess what we found.

The flooring really started out as a footnote in the grand scheme of things.  Noteworthy but we’d figure it out. Right? Figure it out we did.

Little Francis, Jenna and Danny’s oldest son, helping pull nails and lay rope in the floor.

Beating the Summer Chlorine Green

malibu.jpg

Summer is hard on our hair. Wait...but I thought winter was hard on it too?! Yeah...we know. Living in Minnesota can be a drag. But let's focus on the positive! The sun is out, it's humid, and the snow melt in the St. Croix is a balmy 70 degrees. *shivers* That might be a little chilly for your liking still, so you probably opt for the pool if you're in the mood for a summer cool-off. But nothing is worse than the dingey green cast your hair takes on after a couple of hours in the chlorine. We're sharing a couple preventive measures and quick fixes so you can beat the big, bad, green chlorine machine!

Why does hair turn green, anyway?

Many people don't know this, but it's not actually the chlorine turning your hair green, it's copper! There are numerous different chemicals dissolved in pool water meant to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and algae, and one of those chemicals is copper. You know, what the Statue of Liberty is made of? The shiny bronze metal turns a minty green the longer it's exposed to oxygen and the elements in an effort to protect the remaining copper from breaking down. The copper found in pool water attaches to the rough, outer layer on each hair strand, called the cuticle. It gets nice and comfy there and if it isn't removed shortly after, it oxidizes when exposed to sun, heat, and water until it gives off that green glow. Once it's settled in, it can break down the disulfide bonds in your hair, causing dryness, brittleness, and breakage. You haven't been mislead your whole life though, there's chlorine built up in your hair too, that's what gives it the post-pool smell, the slippery, gummy feeling, and the straw-like texture once hair is dry.

SIDE NOTE: Copper can be found in your everyday tap water, well water, and lake water at varying levels, along with other metals like iron. You can get green hair from high amounts of copper in a lake, and orange hair from high amounts of iron (rust) in your shower. Metals in your water are not harmful unless they are dissolved in high amounts. Sometimes they're just a little annoying when it comes to dealing with your hair! If you're going swimming at all (unless you swim in bottled water) these tips will be helpful in preventing chemical and mineral buildup for everyone!

Interesting, huh? Now you know! But we're not saying stay out of the water for the rest of your life either! Here are some measures you can take to reduce the effects on your hair.

Wet your hair down before you get in the pool

This is a big one. It makes SUCH a difference! If you wet your hair down thoroughly right before you hop in the pool, your hair cuticle has already absorbed all the freshwater it can hold. Hair is really thirsty, so it drinks up whatever it can find and if it's already satisfied with some pure, clean aqua, the chemicals in the water are less likely to sink in and cause the green grimy buildup.

Use a deep conditioning masque while you swim

Instead of wetting your hair down with water before you take a dip, why not multitask and get a good deep condition in while you swim? We recommend EVO The Great Hydrator moisture mask combed thru damp hair and tossed into a messy bun or braid. Your hair will soak up all the moisture from the masque instead of the pool or lake and in case you do decide to take a full on dunk, you'll know you've got a great buffer in there so the chemicals doesn't stand a chance!

Keep you hair out of the water

Okay, this one's obvious, but important. While we don't want to ruin your summer fun, sometimes the easiest way to solve a problem is to avoid it completely. We know swim caps aren't the fashion statement of the summer, so a simple messy bun will do the trick to keep your hair elevated and out of the water.  Floatie, anyone?

In case you're already past preventive measures...

Use a Clarifying Shampoo

We recommend a clarifying shampoo to anyone and everyone, but especially right after you swim. It works like a hair and scalp reset and can help remove minerals, build-up, excess product, and scalp irritation. Especially for color treated blonde hair, this is a good tool to keep on hand if you're in the pool all day! Massage in like a normal shampoo right after you're done in the pool, and follow with your regular shampoo and conditioning regimen. A good clarifying shampoo won't strip color or leave hair feeling dry and brittle. We love EVO Normal Persons Daily Shampoo for everyone. It has a clean, fresh scent and feels amazing on the scalp!

malibu3.jpg

Swimmers Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner

If you're in the pool a few times a week, you NEED this in your shower!!! This is the companion line to the Malibu in-salon Treatment (see below) but it's an AMAZING duo that works and smells great. It removes chlorine from the hair, adds back in the moisture & shine your hair has been missing, AND has antioxidants that help defend your hair from future chemical absorption. You can replace your regular shampoo and conditioner with this in the summertime so easily, and we also recommend this for your kiddos that are in the lake, river, or pool 24/7, too!

Malibu In Salon Treatment

This is the heavy hitter if you're a swim, sun, or outdoor addict and just can't stay away. There are lots of Malibu treatments we love for prepping color, soothing scalp irritation, removing hard water build-up, and generally fighting the harmful effects of free radicals that damage our hair every day (we looking at you convertible drivers and motorcyclists!) but the swimmers wellness packet can literally save your hair. During your treatment at the shampoo bowl, we mix the powdered crystals with a little water and scrunch it into damp hair. Depending on the severity of the chemical buildup, we might even cap it and let you process under gentle heat to really help the product do it's magic.  After a quick rinse,  shampoo, and condition, your hair has life again, the green is gone, and it doesn't feel gummy or tangley anymore! At The Hair Tailor we do Malibu Treatments for $45, but if you add on a treatment to a haircut or color service it's $35!

Are you feeling a little green the summer? Try out a few of these tips next time you take a dip!

20 Fun Facts About The Hair Tailor Salon & Team

sign.jpg

1. Our building, the Isaac Staples Sawmill, was originally built in the late 1800s. It's been used for a bunch of different purposes over the years including flour mill, lumber mill, and a manufacturing company for windows and doors.

2. There was a fire in 1894 that destroyed all of the wooden structures leaving only the limestone smokestack. The current metal-sided building that stands today was rebuilt by the Stillwater Manufacturing Co in 1900.

floor.jpg

3. Before The Hair Tailor was established in 2015, the salon was an art studio space — hence all of the paint splatter you can see on our existing floorboards. We love it!

4. Renovations for our current salon space took around six months and while tearing out the wall and replacing fixtures, they found quite a few interesting things! (If you'd like to know the deats, ask our owner Jenna at your next appointment!)

5. Because the salon is on the third floor of the building, it stays nice and toasty warm in the winter. We also get tons of natural sunlight year-round, so we open our windows all the time, too!

6. Because we open our windows frequently in the warmer months, we've all become expert bee killers! (Side note: anyone know of a guy who can custom make some window screens for us?)

7. You've probably noticed that our entire team follows an all-black dress code. We've chosen the all-black wardrobe life because it looks nice, clean, and professional. Plus we would ruin our other clothes if we didn't wear dark colors.

8. Believe it or not, every stylist at The Hair Tailor is currently wearing EasiHair tape-in extensions. We didn't plan it that way, we all just love them so much!

9. You would think that working at a hair salon means you get your hair done whenever you want to. Truth is, we are the last people that usually get to have a little love and attention! It's just hard for us to find time to spoil ourselves!

10. We proudly serve River Moon Coffee, locally sourced from River Falls, Wisconsin. We love it SO much (probably a little too much actually).

coffee3.jpg

11. Since The Hair Tailor is located right in downtown Stillwater, we are have access to many amazing local restaurants and eateries. We eat out way too much! If only if these places didn't deliver . . .

12. Jenna Fossum is our fearless leader, but when Jenna Lundell joined our team a few months ago, we had to find a way to distinguish between the two. We tried to get Queen Jenna and Princess Jenna to happen, but it just didn't stick. We decided to go with Boss and Jenna L. in the end.

13. Elysia (one of our amazing receptionists) joined our team this spring and nobody knew how to pronounce her name. She had to correct us a million times and we finally got it down. Wait . . . it's ah-liss-ee-ah . . . right?

14. One half of our team (Jenna F., Jenna L., and Lydia), live in Wisconsin, and the other half (Carlee, Felicia, and Elysia) live in Minnesota. Good thing we aren't football fans . . .

15.  Lydia, our Salon Operations Manager, is the third of eight kids and one of two girls. Is it any wonder she likes to come hangout at work on her days off?

16.  Jenna Fossum is a total clean freak. We sometimes have to force her to leave the salon at night or she would  literally stay all night tidying up!

17. Speaking of cleaning, did you know that the whole team deep cleans our entire salon every Saturday night? Nothin' like a massive deep clean to kick off our weekend! (Some would think it sounds horrible, but it actually isn't so bad when everyone pitches in. We think of it as a team-building activity! We usually crank up the tunes and are done in 45 mins, easy!)

18. About once every quarter, we cut out clippings from our stockpile of magazines and collage individual dream boards. Once they're complete, we share our goals, challenges, and inspirations we put on our boards at our monthly team meetings and hang them on the wall as reminders!

collage.jpg

19. We're known to go on the occasional field trip together. Valley Fair in the summer, a haunted hayride in the fall, and this past winter, the team even went to St. Martin for a caribbean getaway. I wonder where we'll end up next? (Carlee says most likely the looney bin.)

20. We consider each member of our team as part of our family. We truly believe our communication, camaraderie, and relationships are the foundation for the positive and relaxed atmosphere we create for our clients.

Why We Love: BIG Professional Color

BIG2.jpg

It's a little bit of a mystery what goes on in the color room while we mix up the magic that changes your hair color, and it's pretty likely that no one has ever shared with you what products they use and why! We brought BIG Pro into The Hair Tailor just over a year ago and we are OBSESSED! Today we're sharing why we love BIG pro and choose to use it on all of our amazing clients!

It's kind of a long story, but....

Most hair colors contain ammonia. You've probably heard of it, it's a common household cleaning product and it has a very distinct smell....but ammonia is a powerful ingredient found in hair color that helps open the cuticle layer of your hair, allowing the color pigment to penetrate into the cortex of the hair and stay put, making your color last longer. In recent years, there has been a TON of research done on the effects of ammonia in hair color, and what scientists found is that the vapors from ammonia can cause long term damage to the lungs to anyone exposed to the ammonia vapors in high doses for extended periods of time. EEK! Sooooo hair color developers, in order to protect against the effects of the ammonia vapors, removed ammonia from the formulations completely and created MEA: a synthetic ammonia-like molecule that works similarly to real ammonia, just without the odor. But a few year into the "ammonia-free hair color" craze, they discovered that MEA can actually have negative effects on the health of your hair. Because MEA is synthetic, it doesn't work as well as ammonia, and can even leave residual chemicals after your color service is over. It has been shown to increase color fade, cause dryness, and weaken the hair.

So where does BIG Pro fit into all of this?

Big is color line that uses ammonia. but it has a new ammonia encapsulation technology that reduces inhalation and irritation by up to 90% AKA it uses the power 0f ammonia without the harmful vapors!  So, now that we got that out of the way, here's a list of other reasons it will benefit you!

Why we love BIG
