Why We Love: BIG Professional Color
It's a little bit of a mystery what goes on in the color room while we mix up the magic that changes your hair color, and it's pretty likely that no one has ever shared with you what products they use and why! We brought BIG Pro into The Hair Tailor just over a year ago and we are OBSESSED! Today we're sharing why we love BIG pro and choose to use it on all of our amazing clients!
It's kind of a long story, but....
Most hair colors contain ammonia. You've probably heard of it, it's a common household cleaning product and it has a very distinct smell....but ammonia is a powerful ingredient found in hair color that helps open the cuticle layer of your hair, allowing the color pigment to penetrate into the cortex of the hair and stay put, making your color last longer. In recent years, there has been a TON of research done on the effects of ammonia in hair color, and what scientists found is that the vapors from ammonia can cause long term damage to the lungs to anyone exposed to the ammonia vapors in high doses for extended periods of time. EEK! Sooooo hair color developers, in order to protect against the effects of the ammonia vapors, removed ammonia from the formulations completely and created MEA: a synthetic ammonia-like molecule that works similarly to real ammonia, just without the odor. But a few year into the "ammonia-free hair color" craze, they discovered that MEA can actually have negative effects on the health of your hair. Because MEA is synthetic, it doesn't work as well as ammonia, and can even leave residual chemicals after your color service is over. It has been shown to increase color fade, cause dryness, and weaken the hair.
So where does BIG Pro fit into all of this?
